RHONE ALPES

The Rhône-Alpes region is made up of eight départements: Ain, Ardèche, Drôme, Isère, Loire, Rhône, Haute-Savoie and Savoie. The capital of the region is Lyon, which is also its largest city. It is France's second-largest region in terms of area (after Midi-Pyrénées) and the second-largest in terms of population and the economy (after the Paris region). It is also ranked as Europe's 8th-largest region.

HAUTE SAVOIE

The home of skiing and winter sports, Haute-Savoie has ski areas for Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and so on. The département counts over 50 winter sports resorts, the most famous being Chamonix, Megève, Morzine, La Clusaz and Saint-Gervais, the most family-friendly Les Carroz, Les Gets, Les Contamines-Montjoie and Le Grand-Bornand, and the most modern Flaine and Avoriaz.

In summer, you can try mountaineering, hiking, water sports, cycling to explore the region, mountain biking, airborne sports and horse riding. Those who are less into sport may enjoy walking, fishing, visiting museums, castles and churches, taking a cruise on the lakes in the region or exploring the natural reserves and major protected sites such as the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice), the Aiguille du Midi, the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval, not to mention the world-famous spa resorts of évian-les-Bains, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains frequented by many visitors.

GASTRONOMY

Diots : The regional name given to small raw pork sausages, diots are often prepared with wine, whether red or white. In the olden days they used to be cooked on vine shoots in cellars known as sartos. They go well with crozets (small pasta squares), polenta and cabbage. Longeôles Saucisses These sausages, produced in the Chablais and the lower valley of the Arve (around Annemasse), are made from pork rinds chopped into strips, to which the following are added: sausage meat, salt, pepper and wild cumin. Longeôles sausages are ready to eat within 3 or 4 days. They are boiled and served hot with potatoes and salad. Cheese The mountainous region has specific races of dairy cow such as the Abondance, Tarine, and Montbéliarde, which feed on the natural grass of the valleys and high mountain pastures. Traditional and specific production methods are applied in the production of the AOC cheese "Abondance", the fruit of this Alpine terroir.
